Energy Management Program in Eugene, Oregon. Renewable Energy Technician Program (PDF 50 KB)

Columbia Gorge Community College The Dalles , Oregon.  Offers a Renewable Energy Technology Program.
Columbia Gorge Community College began its Renewable Energy Technology training program, focusing on wind technician training, in January 2007. We designed our curriculum with direct and continuing industry guidance, and we are supported in part by wind industry partners.  The RET program now offers a one-year certificate and two-year associate degree. We can enroll up to 36 students annually at this time, but will expand capacity to 72 students starting this spring through US Department of Labor ETA CBJT funding awarded in March 2008. By spring 2010 we will train up to 106 wind  technicians annually, with two entry points and two graduations annually.  Contact:  Dan Spatz, Chief Institutional Advancement Officer, Columbia Gorge Community College, (541) 506-6110 dspatz@cgcc.cc.or.us

Consortium for Education in Renewable Energy Technology

Includes nine institutions, mostly technical colleges and community colleges, that provide renewable energy training courses.

Laramie County Community College initiated the design of a Wind  Energy Technology Program about a year and a half ago based on an industry announcement that opened up potential for expanded wind energy development in WY --- our program includes a one-year Wind Energy Certificate, an Associate of Applied Science degree and an Associate of Science degree.  The program goal is to graduate qualified technicians capable of maintaining utility-scale wind turbines.  We received money from NSF's ATE program for initial start-up - primarily hiring a wind energy subject matter expert.  Laramie County Community College , 1400 East College Drive , Cheyenne, WY 82007 mhull@lccc.wy.edu 307-778-1245

Educational Opportunities at INSTITUTE OF ENERGY CONVERSION, 451 Wyoming Road, Newark, DE 19716 302-831-6200

Educational accomplishments at the Institute of Energy Conversion include:
Training of over 50 professionals active in today's photovoltaic industry ; Educating over 20 Ph.D. graduates and over 50 M.S. graduates with research in photovoltaics; Providing undergraduates from selected science, engineering, and social science disciplines with unique opportunities to participate in current
research programs at IEC; IEC uses its unique multidisciplinary approach to provide students with opportunities ranging from purely theoretical research to laboratory work geared toward practical
applications. Students involved with IEC learn how to interact effectively with engineers and scientists engaged in long-term research programs in photovoltaics. IEC has collaborated with the University of Delaware's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy in its effort to educate the public on the need for photovoltaic electric power generation as part of our national environmental and energy policy.

Midland College has developed an Energy Technology Program that includes wind energy production. A brief description follows:

The Energy Technology Program will provide training in the electrical and mechanical aspects of the installation, operation, and maintenance systems used in petroleum explorations and production and in wind energy production.  Graduates will be prepared for jobs as field, installation, operation and maintenance technicians.

Developed as a direct response to employer requests, the program is uniquely structured with two basic certificates applicable to both petroleum and wind energy industries.  These certificates include competencies in technical calculations, basic fluid power, electricity principles, electromechanical troubleshooting and repair, safety, programmable logic controllers, pump operation, field reports and data transfer, and working with servers.  Upon completion of the basic certificates, students may elect to specialize in either petroleum or wind energy and acquire advanced skills relating to these fields.

Another unique aspect of the program is that the basic certificate is offered through dual enrollment to eligible high school students.  This approach accommodates the need for area high schools to incorporate curriculum linked to the central component of the regional economy – energy production.  It also recognizes that many high school students seek jobs in the energy industry immediately upon graduation. By mastering the competencies addressed in the basic certificates, these individuals are better prepared to perform successfully in entry level positions.

  • To raise the professional standards of those engaged in carbon reduction
  • To improve the practice of carbon reduction by encouraging energy business professionals in a continuing education program of professional development
  • To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles practices of carbon reduction professionals through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct
  • To award special recognition to those individuals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for carbon reduction

Certifications

Certified Energy Manager. CEM.  Since its inception in 1981, the Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) credential has become widely accepted and used as a measure of professional accomplishment within the energy management field.  It has gained industry-wide use as the standard for qualifying energy professionals both in the United States and abroad. It is recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Office of Federal Energy Management Programs (FEMP), and the U.S. Agency for International Development, as well as by numerous state energy offices, major utilities, corporations and energy service companies

Certified Carbon Manager. The Association of Energy Engineers (CRM) program was developed to recognize the expertise of those professionals who have special knowledge and experience in the area of facilitating organization with the goal of becoming as “carbon neutral” as possible in their efforts to support and be a part of the new and growing “green-minded” economy.

LEED Accredited professional Certification   -According to the Green Building Certification Institute, LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) are building industry professionals who have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building and the LEED® Green Building Rating System™. The LEED AP credential indicates that the professional has the knowledge and skills to facilitate the LEED certification process. LEED Professional Accreditation is a voluntary designation achieved by over 60,000 individuals who have passed the LEED Professional Accreditation exam. The Green Building Certification Institute recommends that LEED AP candidates have building industry knowledge, as well as experience working with green building professionals from multiple disciplines.
Certified Sustainable Development Professional  - (CSDP) Another program by the Association of Energy Engineers designed to provide recognition for professionals who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the sustainable development field. These individuals have demonstrated high levels of technical expertise in energy management and environmental practices.
